The front desk was short-staffed, and our guests weren't getting the best service. Managers told me daily that we weren't attracting the right applicants. I went home thinking about how to find more candidates. All of a sudden, the idea hit me. What if we cross-trained housekeepers, who weren’t getting full shifts, to work at the front desk? This would solve our staffing issue and help housekeepers earn a full paycheck.
I had to get managers’ buy-in for this and wanted their full support. nce scheduling would be a challenge. The general manager and I met with housekeeping managers and front desk supervisors, and the plan came together with their full support. It included advertising the opportunity in the employee newsletter, finding interested employees, assessing their skills, identifying training tools, and creating individual training plans. Their main concern was timing-how quickly could we train someone to be fully trained, since it involved learning new technology, enhancing communication skills, and developing other necessary skills.
We worked quickly to train everyone. It was tough keeping track of all the training plans and teaching new skills, but we had the right tools in place to help us. Some employees were hesitant at first but motivated to learn. Within weeks, we trained three people at the front desk. We then expanded the program so anyone in the hotel could learn a new job. Room service attendants trained at the bar, front desk agents trained in revenue, and bar employees learned about management.
This experiment transformed lives as people developed new skills and showed up to work with enthusiasm, thus increasing employee satisfaction and lowering turnover costs. Watching them grow and solve problems was amazing. It started with an idea and people willing to help solve a problem.
